Om museet
Marianne Brandt was born in Chemnitz in 1893 and is considered an outstanding graduate of the Bauhaus. She worked at the Bauhaus from 1924 to 1929, last serving as acting head of the metal workshop, and designed tea and coffee services, ashtrays and lamps, some of which went into series production. She later headed the design department of the Ruppelwerke in Gotha, and after the Second World War worked in Dresden and Berlin at colleges and institutes of design.
During the Second World War, a high-explosive bomb hit the family's residence in Chemnitz; the cellar survived. When Brandt returned to her hometown in 1954, she lived with her sister Hanna in the temporarily repaired parental home and devoted herself to painting, graphic art, collages and small sculptures. In the GDR she was largely forgotten for a long time. She spent her last years in a nursing home in Kirchberg, where she died in 1983.
Today the Marianne Brandt-Gesellschaft e.V. looks after the study rooms in the parental and residence house on Heinrich-Beck-Straße. The association aims to collect and preserve the intellectual legacy and work of the designer and to relate it to current developments in design. Visitors can find a small exhibition and selected literature to browse. Since 2019, a plaque from the project "frauenorte sachsen" at the entrance commemorates Marianne Brandt.
