Særudstilling
Small presentation marking the 300th anniversary of the Elector's death, with splendid riding equipment from his possession; end date not specified.
The coaches, sleighs, and harnesses of the Wittelsbach court stables (Hof-Marstall) were already on display in the 19th century. After the end of the monarchy, the first Marstallmuseum was set up in 1923 in the former court riding school designed by Leo von Klenze on Marstallplatz near the Residenz. The collection was moved to Nymphenburg in the late 1930s or early 1940s and thus escaped the destruction of the downtown stable complex in World War II.
Since 1950, the museum has been housed in the so-called Leibpferde-Stallung (stables for the court's riding horses) in the southern Kavaliersbau of Schloss Nymphenburg. Completed in 1740 under Elector Karl Albrecht, the stable once housed the court's riding horses in summer, while in winter the horses were kept in the city. In the 1980s, the exhibition was renovated and redesigned.
More than forty coaches, sleighs, and sedan chairs from three centuries showcase the art of courtly carriage building and driving culture. The centerpiece is the coronation coach of Emperor Charles VII in French Rococo style; in the 19th century, the collection culminates in the state vehicles of King Ludwig II. There are also harnesses, riding tack, and paintings, including portraits of Ludwig II's riding horses. A new room is dedicated to the people who worked at the Munich court stables. On the upper floor is the Museum Nymphenburger Porzellan with the Bäuml Collection, which can be visited with the same ticket. The museum is managed by the Bavarian Palace Administration (Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung).
