Maschinenmuseum Kiel-Wik
Technology museum in two buildings of Kiel's old gasworks on the Kiel Canal: working engines, steam engines and a submarine diesel.
Om museet
The Maschinenmuseum (machinery museum) began in 1985 as a private initiative of technology enthusiasts who wanted to save historic power engines from the scrapyard and get them running again. At the end of 2005 the non-profit Bürgerstiftung Maschinenmuseum Kiel-Wik (community foundation) was established and has run the museum ever since. A few employees and many volunteers restore the machines, look after the collection and organize the program.
The museum occupies two listed brick buildings of the former Kiel gasworks in the Maritime Quarter of Wik, within sight of the Holtenau locks. Its focus is the history of mechanical engineering in the Kiel region as a shipbuilding and industrial center, from the early Otto engine to steam engines and hot-air engines to large diesel engines.
True to the principle "Technik, die funktioniert" (technology that works), the exhibits are dismantled, cleaned and repaired, and missing parts are reproduced where necessary. Among the best-known pieces is a submarine diesel engine built by Motorenwerke Mannheim in 1944, which was found in a bunker in 1978 and restored to running order over many years. There is also a portable steam engine from 1954 that was never delivered, a former teaching steam engine from Kiel's technical college and Minimo mopeds made in Kiel.
On theme Sundays, usually the third Sunday of the month, the machines run in front of an audience. There are also lectures, a summer festival, vintage vehicle meetups and programs for school classes.
