Museum Altes Zollhaus
Island museum in the restored customs house of about 1855: seafaring, beach finds, birth and death, seaside resort tourism, and everyday life on Baltrum.
Om museet
The building in the Westdorf of Baltrum is a typical East Frisian double house, a so-called Bummert, and is one of the oldest houses on the island. It was built around 1855 as a customs house and was subsequently repurposed many times: as a teacher's residence, a community nurse station with a delivery room, a municipal office, a doctor's and dentist's practice, and a savings bank branch.
The Heimatverein Baltrum, founded in 1989, bought the house from the municipality in 1998 and restored it over the years through volunteer work. The museum opened in May 2007, and a year later the converted attic was added as a space for exhibitions and events.
The exhibition is spread over four rooms and two galleries. It tells of freight sailing as the islanders' former main occupation, of the former maternity room (Mutterstube), in which over 140 children were born between 1932 and 1969, of gravestones, storm surges, and ice winters, of the development of the seaside resort, and of the everyday life of earlier generations. A picture gallery shows past and present islanders. An audio guide accompanies visitors through the house; on the upper floor, special exhibitions and film evenings take place.
