Om museet

Citizens of Biberach began collecting objects documenting the town’s history in 1898; in 1902, this led to a museum in the former Holy Spirit Hospital (Spital zum Heiligen Geist). The extensive hospital complex is considered the largest medieval building ensemble of the former Free Imperial City and was comprehensively renovated for museum use.

A defining moment for the museum was the bequest of the Munich painters Anton Braith and Christian Mali, which came to Biberach between 1905 and 1908. Their two studios have survived completely intact and are rare examples of 19th-century artists’ workshops. For a long time, the museum was therefore called the Braith-Mali-Museum; today it goes by Museum Biberach.

The exhibitions are divided into art, history, archaeology, and natural history. The art collection ranges from late Gothic sculpture and painting of the 17th to 19th centuries to modernism, including a sizable group of works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, whose brother lived in Biberach, and works by Jakob Bräckle. The natural history section presents the region’s habitats, the archaeology section shows finds from Upper Swabia, and a demonstration weaving workshop showcases the town’s traditional textile craft. The museum also presents special exhibitions, at times in the Bräckle-Atelierhaus (Bräckle’s studio house) in Winterreute.
