Heimatmuseum Eversberg
Volunteer-run local history museum in a half-timbered house from 1756 in Meschede-Eversberg on agriculture, crafts, and local history of the Sauerland.
Om museet
Plans for a local history collection in Eversberg existed as early as 1923, but it was not until 1933 that the priest Lorenz Pieper, a native of Eversberg, and the teacher Peter Wiese began to gather objects systematically. Supported by schoolchildren and city workers, they searched stables, attics, and cellars. In 1934 a farmer's parlor was set up in the town hall, and in February 1935 the Heimatmuseumsverein (local history museum association) was founded.
Because the collection grew quickly, in 1939 the so-called Engeln Haus was acquired, a slate-clad half-timbered house from 1756 that is now a protected monument. The Second World War interrupted the plans, and part of the holdings was lost. From 1951 the house was renovated and the museum was set up there; in 1999 the rooms of a former caretaker's apartment were added. Since the incorporation of Eversberg in 1975, the building has belonged to the city of Meschede.
The tour shows how people in the Sauerland lived and worked: house building, fieldwork and livestock keeping, baking, churning butter, and slaughtering, forestry and hunting, and numerous crafts from blacksmith to cigar maker, including many cast-iron stove and oven plates. Furnished living rooms, testimonies of folk piety, and a model of the local history complete the collection. The house is run by volunteers from the association, who also guide visitors through the rooms.
