Museum für brandenburgische Kirchen- und Kulturgeschichte des Mittelalters
Museum on the medieval church and cultural history of Brandenburg in the bishops' residence Burg Ziesar, with a chapel and keep.
Om museet
Burg Ziesar is mentioned in documents as early as the 10th century; the oldest surviving parts today, including the granite keep, probably date from around 1200. Its heyday began in the mid-14th century, when the bishops of Brandenburg expanded the complex into their residence. Up to the Reformation, living quarters with underfloor heating, wall paintings, and the castle chapel, consecrated around 1470, were built, an outstanding example of Brick Gothic in the Mark Brandenburg.
After the Reformation the castle served as an administrative seat; from 1819 to 1945 it was in private ownership. After the Second World War it was nationalized, first used as housing for refugees, and from 1954 to 1993 as a boarding school.
After several years of renovation, the Museum für brandenburgische Kirchen- und Kulturgeschichte des Mittelalters opened on May 13, 2005. The permanent exhibition "Wege in die Himmelsstadt" makes the castle itself the most important exhibit and tells of bishops, faith, and rule between 800 and 1550. Since 2019 an exhibition of paintings by the landscape painter Otto Altenkirch, born in Ziesar, has complemented the museum, and the boarding school period can be explored digitally by tablet. In the Jerusalem Room, large-scale wall paintings from the 1330s are presented with a light and sound installation; more recent research suggests that the map depicted there may be a map of Palestine.
