Photography museum at Bahnhof Zoo in the former Landwehrkasino – home to the Helmut Newton Foundation and the Kunstbibliothek’s photography collection.
The Newton Foundation replaces its long-running permanent presentation on the first floor with a room-filling film installation about Helmut and June Newton, complemented by posters, magazines, and changing behind-the-scenes looks at individual iconic photographs.
Group exhibition by the Newton Foundation on spaces as stage and subject – from staged portraits and empty interiors to Newton’s hotel and outdoor settings in fashion photography.
On view in Berlin for the first time: a one-of-a-kind album compiled in 1999 with 112 hand-inscribed original Newton prints from a Swiss private collection.
Using a wide range of photo objects from its collection, the Kunstbibliothek asks what makes up a photograph materially – from early processes to digital images and AI.
Om museet
The neoclassical building opposite Zoologischer Garten station was built in 1908/09 to plans by Heino Schmieden and Julius Boethke as an officers’ club (casino) for the Berlin Landwehr. Behind the plain facade lay lavishly painted banquet rooms, including the barrel-vaulted Kaisersaal (Emperor’s Hall) on the third floor, which was badly damaged in World War II.
After 1950, the building was used by the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library) and the Galerie des 20. Jahrhunderts, and at times also by the Berlinische Galerie; later it served mainly as a storage facility. Shortly before his death, the Berlin-born photographer Helmut Newton established a foundation at the end of 2003 and agreed with the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz on the permanent use of the two lower floors. In June 2004, the Museum für Fotografie opened with two Newton exhibitions, in the presence of his widow June, who was herself a photographer under the name Alice Springs.
Since then, the Newton Foundation and the Kunstbibliothek’s photography collection have shared the building. Following its renovation, the Kaisersaal has served since 2010 as a climate-controlled exhibition space for photography from the 19th to the 21st century. The long-running permanent presentation “Helmut Newton’s Private Property” was replaced in 2026 by the film-based show “Intermezzo”.
