Museum Osthusschule
Volunteer-run school and local history museum in Bielefeld-Senne with a classroom from around 1900, a half-timbered school from 1832, and a large museum garden.
Om museet
The Osthusschule was built in 1895 on land donated to the municipality of Senne by the Osthus family, and was inaugurated in January 1896 as the town’s third school. After the elementary school closed in 1971, the building served as a youth hostel and open youth center.
In 1993 the Senne district council decided to set up a school museum and neighborhood archive here. High school teacher and later local heritage officer Hans Schumacher and school principal Volker Menzel converted the building with a great deal of their own labor; in June 1995, exactly one hundred years after construction, the museum opened. Since 1998 a friends’ association has run the museum, and in 1999 an exhibition on rural crafts was added in the converted attic.
From 2002, a half-timbered school from 1832 from Oldentrup, which had been in storage for years after being dismantled, was re-erected next to the Osthusschule and opened in 2004. It shows how a village teacher lived under one roof with his apartment and a small farm.
Today visitors can see a furnished classroom from around 1900, collections of school materials, tools of Senne craftsmen, paintings and sculptures by regional artists, and the local history archive of the city district. Surrounding the buildings, some 7,000 m² of grounds hold perennial beds, a rose garden, an herb garden, and a forest nature trail.
