Om museet

The Museum Rupertiwinkel tells the cultural history of the landscape between the Salzach and the Waginger See, which for centuries belonged to the Archbishopric of Salzburg and only became permanently Bavarian in 1816. It is housed in Tittmoning Castle, a border fortress built in the 13th century that later also served as the summer residence of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg.

The beginnings go back to the work of a historical society, which moved its local museum into specially fitted castle rooms. After the Second World War the house reopened in 1953, and ten years later it was given a legal basis as a foundation. Long known as the "Heimathaus des Rupertiwinkel" (Rupertiwinkel Local Heritage House), it has carried its present name since 2014.

In 23 historic exhibition rooms, tools for crafts and farming, tiled stoves, folk art, ceramics, furniture and paintings are on display, along with prehistoric finds including a Roman mosaic floor and wrought-iron grave crosses from the 18th and 19th centuries. A special feature is the roughly 130 painted Schützenscheiben from 1600 to 1930, the largest collection of its kind in Bavaria. In the attic, where a reception camp for expellees was set up in 1946, a Sudeten German heritage room displays relics of the lost homeland.
