Om museet

The Museum St. Ingbert was established in the late 1980s in a converted former administration building in the city center. Based on a concept by Georg W. Költzsch, it extended over four floors with more than 1,000 square meters of space. At its center was the work of Albert Weisgerber (1878–1915), regarded as the most important Saarland painter of classical modernism; in addition, the museum showed changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art several times a year.

Weisgerber studied in Munich under Franz von Stuck, spent time in Paris, where he met Henri Matisse, and later led the Neue Münchner Secession. He was killed in World War I. His estate is looked after by the Albert-Weisgerber-Stiftung (foundation), established in 1992 by the city of St. Ingbert and the Saarpfalz district. Its collection comprises about 75 paintings and a large number of drawings, making it one of the most significant holdings on this artist.

In 2007 the city council decided to vacate the museum building for a state authority; since then museum operations have been suspended, and works from the foundation have been seen mainly as loans in exhibitions at other institutions. The city is now converting the historic Alte Baumwollspinnerei of 1885 into an administrative center, which is also to house a new Albert-Weisgerber-Museum with a permanent presentation of the collection. The opening is planned for 2027/2028.
