Om museet

The Museums-Eisenbahn Minden was founded in 1977 when railway enthusiasts from Minden and Preußisch Oldendorf split off from the Dampfeisenbahn Weserbergland, which had been running its own steam locomotives in East Westphalia since 1972. In its very first year, the club ran its first trains on the Mindener Kreisbahnen and the Wittlager Kreisbahn, and at the end of 1977 the Prussian T 13 “Stettin 7906” arrived in Minden.

From 1984 the club built its own engine shed with a workshop at Minden-Oberstadt station, which was inaugurated in 1985; in 1989 the restored station building followed as the museum station. A second shed was completed in Preußisch Oldendorf by 1993. From 1991 to 2002 the club also operated the Rahden–Uchte branch line with an Uerdingen railbus.

The guiding idea is to let people experience railway history in operation rather than just putting vehicles on display. In Minden, the Prussian train, first presented in 1994, represents a branch-line train of the Prussian state railways from the period before World War I – the second- to fourth-class cars wear their historic class colors and show the social differences of travel at the time. In Preußisch Oldendorf, a diesel train from the 1950s represents the municipal light railways of northern Germany.

The collection includes the Prussian tank locomotives T 11 “Hannover 7512” (1908) and T 13 “Stettin 7906” (1912), both currently out of service; the trains in Minden are hauled by the T 9.3 “Kattowitz 7348”. There are also diesel locomotives, railcars and numerous passenger cars. Vehicles, buildings and operations are looked after exclusively by club members in their spare time.
