Om museet

In the 1960s, remains of a late 12th-century settlement were discovered at the Krumme Fenn in southwestern Berlin. Excavations revealed a small village that was founded around 1170, was grouped around an open space and was abandoned again after a few decades, around 1230.

Based on these findings, a friends' association was founded in 1975 and began reconstruction at the historic site. Since then, replica dwellings, storehouses, workshops, a palisade, gardens and fields have been built on around eight hectares to show what rural life in the region might have looked like around 1200.

Since 1995 the open-air museum has been part of the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin. To this day, the friends' association's volunteers bring the village to life on season weekends with craft demonstrations, farming and living history, while the museum is responsible for guided tours and educational programs for daycare centers and schools.

Experimental archaeology and the keeping of old livestock breeds are a particular focus: in addition to the rare Skudde sheep, the Düppeler Weideschwein (Düppel pasture pig) is bred here, an effort to recreate a vanished breed of domestic pig. The organically raised animals are part of a landscape concept based on diversity.
