Om museet

U-461 belongs to the Soviet Project 651, known in the West as the Juliett class – the largest diesel-electric cruise missile submarines ever built. The boat was laid down in 1961, launched at the end of 1962, and commissioned in October 1965. Over its service life it bore the designations K-24 and B-124 and served with the Red Banner Baltic Fleet, including on patrols in the North Atlantic. It was decommissioned in the early 1990s.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, several demilitarized boats of the class were sold or leased. Under the direction of Thomas Lamla, U-461 was towed by two tugboats to Peenemünde on Usedom in December 1998 and has been moored at the pier of the former naval base in the main harbor ever since. At just over 85 meters long, the boat is considered the last surviving example of its class.

The tour leads through eight sections – from the bow torpedo room through the crew and officers' quarters, the radio room and control room, the galley, and the engine rooms to the stern torpedo room. Only part of the interior is accessible on your own, but nearly the entire boat can be explored on a pre-booked guided tour. Since 2025, the future of the privately run museum has been uncertain: new harbor regulations require proof that a vessel can float, which, according to the owner, the boat, resting in the silt, cannot provide; he has therefore announced plans to sell it.
