Om museet

Burg Linn dates back to the 12th century; around 1200 the initially wooden complex was rebuilt in brick. Its hexagonal floor plan is unusual for a lowland castle on the Lower Rhine. Over the centuries the moated castle was expanded, besieged, and rebuilt until it was destroyed in 1704 in the War of the Spanish Succession. Only from 1926 did the restoration of the ruin begin.

In the outer bailey, the Elector of Cologne Clemens August had a brewery building converted into a hunting lodge in the 18th century. In 1806 it passed, together with the castle ruin, to the silk-weaving de Greiff family, who lived there for over a hundred years. After the City of Krefeld took over, the ensemble was opened to the public as a museum. The hunting lodge shows furnished living rooms of the 18th and 19th centuries and a collection of mechanical musical instruments.

The Archäologisches Museum (archaeological museum) grew out of a high bunker planned during the Second World War, which was designed from the outset for later museum use and housed exhibitions from 1952. It presents finds from the Ice Age to the early Middle Ages, above all from the Roman fort Gelduba and the large burial ground of Krefeld-Gellep, including the richly furnished grave of the Frankish prince Arpvar. Since 2021, Gelduba has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Lower German Limes. The ensemble is operated by the City of Krefeld.
