Nahverkehrsmuseum Dortmund
Volunteer-run museum of Dortmund's public transport history at the Mooskamp depot, with rides on historic streetcars.
Om museet
The museum is run by an association founded in 1979 by employees of Dortmunder Stadtwerke (Dortmund's municipal utility) and supporters, in order to run retired Dortmund streetcars on railroad lines. For almost two decades, until 1998, it offered excursion trips on the Almetalbahn near Büren. Until 2018 it was called Westfälische Almetalbahn e. V.; since then it has been the Verkehrshistorische Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Dortmunder Stadtwerke (transport history working group).
In 2001 the association took over the former Mooskamp depot of the Ruhrkohle railroad and port company in Nette; the first vehicle to move in was railcar no. 290, which has been a listed monument since 2004. In 2007 Bahnhof Mooskamp gGmbH was founded to operate the site, and since 2008 museum trains have run on the reactivated Hoesch industrial railroad line between Huckarde and Ellinghausen. Volunteers and participants in employment programs restore and maintain the cars in the museum's own workshop.
With a car shed built in 2012, the collection grew to almost 30 rail vehicles, two buses, and several work vehicles, representing more than 140 years of public transport in Dortmund. The line is now 6.3 km long; because it has no overhead wire, generator cars carried along supply the power. Since 2013 the museum has been part of the Route der Industriekultur (Industrial Heritage Trail). A new training and exhibition building is under construction, and for the International Horticultural Exhibition 2027 (IGA), the depot will be part of Dortmund's Zukunftsgarten (future garden).
