Om museet
The Narrenschopf began in 1969, when the Rottweil saltworks "Wilhelmshall" closed. The town of Bad Dürrheim acquired the octagonal cover of former brine tanks dating from 1847/48 and rebuilt it in the spa town. In 1970 the Vereinigung Schwäbisch-Alemannischer Narrenzünfte (association of Swabian-Alemannic carnival guilds) decided to set up a carnival and folk custom museum there; it opened on May 4, 1973.
Because of large visitor numbers and the wish to house the association's central archive, two extensions were built: from 1981 to 1983 a reconstruction of the second round dome together with a connecting building, and for the 1994 Landesgartenschau (state garden show) an underground copy of the dome with a larger foyer. In 2002 the building and almost all of the figures passed to the Kulturstiftung der Schwäbisch-Alemannischen Fastnacht (cultural foundation).
After a complete redesign, the house reopened in January 2012. Since 2018 the umbrella association VSAN has operated the museum as a municipal enterprise (Eigenbetrieb), and the Verein Narrenschopf supports it as a friends' association. As part of the federal project museum4punkt0, digital offerings were added, including a virtual museum, a 360-degree projection dome, VR stations and a 3D cinema.

Almost all areas are reachable step-free; only the gallery in dome 1 is reached by stairs. Portable museum stools are available free of charge. Content in sign language is available, and guided tours in sign language can be arranged on request.
