Art from the 19th century to the present on the Schöne Aussicht in Kassel – with a Beuys room and a permanent exhibition on documenta.

Marking the Neue Galerie's 50th anniversary, the show presents expansive installations, films and objects from recent acquisitions, for example by Britto Arts Trust, Pınar Öğrenci and Amol K Patil. Its focus is on memory, archives and images of history.
The building on the Schöne Aussicht above the Karlsaue park was built from 1871 to plans by Heinrich von Dehn-Rotfelser as a picture gallery for the landgraves' collection of Old Masters and opened in 1877. During the air raids of 1943 the Neo-Renaissance building was largely gutted by fire; the most important paintings had been moved to safety beforehand. After the war, the Old Masters found a new home in Schloss Wilhelmshöhe.
For the damaged building, the idea emerged of a gallery for more recent art. As early as 1964, documenta 3 used provisionally restored rooms, and the building has repeatedly served as a venue for the world-renowned art exhibition ever since. After extensive conversion it opened in 1976 as the Neue Galerie, where municipal and state holdings are shown together: painting of the 18th and 19th centuries, German Impressionism, classical modernism and contemporary art. For the opening, Joseph Beuys installed a room of his own, which, with the installation "Das Rudel" (The Pack), is still regarded as the museum's centerpiece.
Since the 1980s the collection has grown mainly through contemporary works and acquisitions from documenta, adding international positions and new media. From 2006 to 2011 the building was renovated by Staab Architekten and reopened as a bright, open museum with around 3,500 square meters of exhibition space. Since 2019 the entire upper floor, under the title "about: documenta", has been devoted to the history of the exhibition. In 2026 the Neue Galerie celebrates its 50th anniversary.

According to Hessen Kassel Heritage, museum shops exist only at the Wilhelmshöhe and Herkules visitor centers; no café on site is mentioned.
