The exhibition at the Museum Neues Weimar and the Bauhaus-Museum follows 18 women artists on their path into art and professional life – from the Weimar art schools to the Bauhaus.
Om museet
The building was constructed from 1864 to 1869 to designs by the Prague architect Josef Zítek in the Neo-Renaissance style and is one of the earliest purpose-built museum buildings in Germany. As the Grand Ducal Museum, it displayed the art collections of the Weimar court; after the end of the monarchy in 1919, it continued as the Landesmuseum (state museum) and in the 1920s also showed works of the avant-garde.
Air raids in March 1945 severely damaged the roof. In the GDR the building fell increasingly into disrepair, building materials and fixtures were removed, and by the 1980s only the outer walls remained; at times, demolition was even under discussion.
After reconstruction from 1996 to 1998, it opened in 1999 – the year Weimar was European Capital of Culture – as the Neues Museum Weimar, devoted to contemporary art. For the Bauhaus centenary in 2019, it was refocused on modernism around 1900 and, together with the Bauhaus-Museum opposite, has since formed Weimar's Quartier der Moderne (Modernism Quarter). The permanent exhibition "Wege zum Bauhaus" combines painting of the Weimar School of Painting, Art Nouveau, and works related to Henry van de Velde and Friedrich Nietzsche with hands-on workshop activities.
