Small show in the Mythological Room on the first volume of the Egyptian Dictionary of 1926: archival items show how more than one million handwritten text slips became a standard reference work of Egyptology.
The exhibition traces the zodiac from Babylonia through Egypt to the Greco-Roman world and asks what it still means for astronomy, astrology, and the horoscope today – with objects from Berlin museums, some shown for the first time.
In the staircase hall, a room-filling painting by the artist Michael Müller about the twins Castor and Polydeuces enters into dialogue with ancient depictions of the myth.
Gold jewelry from the Migration Period from the Black Sea region and magnificent early medieval grave goods from the Diergardt Collection, on loan from the Römisch-Germanisches Museum in Cologne.
Om museet
The Neues Museum was built between 1843 and 1855 to designs by Friedrich August Stüler as the second museum building on the Spree Island, directly behind Schinkel's Altes Museum. It was technologically groundbreaking for its time: steam engines worked on the construction site, lightweight iron structures supported ceilings and domes, and every hall received painted decoration related to the objects displayed there. The building housed, among other things, the Egyptian antiquities, the collection of plaster casts, and the "patriotic antiquities" (German prehistory).
The building was badly hit in World War II and remained a ruin for decades. After initial stabilization work in the 1980s, British architect David Chipperfield won the competition for its reconstruction in 1997. His concept complements what survived without imitating it: war damage, remains of historic wall paintings, and new elements made of recycled bricks and light-colored cast stone deliberately stand side by side. The museum reopened in October 2009; as part of Museumsinsel, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
Today the building is shared by the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung (Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection) and the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte (Museum of Prehistory and Early History), supplemented by objects from the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities). The exhibitions span from the Near East to Scandinavia and from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages – from the bust of Nefertiti and Heinrich Schliemann's finds from Troy to the Bronze Age Berlin Gold Hat. Visitors enter the museum through the neighboring James-Simon-Galerie.
