Om museet
The museum has its roots in civic initiative: in 1852 the Natural History Society, the Historical Association for Lower Saxony, and the Association for the Public Art Collection decided to pool their holdings. From this, the Museum für Kunst und Wissenschaft (Museum of Art and Science) opened in 1856 on Sophienstraße, in the building of today's Künstlerhaus.
In 1902 what was then the Provinzialmuseum moved into the stately Neo-Renaissance building on the edge of Maschpark, opposite the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall). From the outset it was a multidisciplinary museum with departments for history, natural history, and art, plus a coin collection and ethnological holdings. Today it is the largest state museum in Lower Saxony.
Since 2013 a new exhibition concept has been implemented that arranges the three floors as a journey around the world: on the first floor, the NaturWelten (Nature Worlds) combine the former vivarium with natural history, so that live fish, reptiles, and birds can be seen alongside specimens and fossils. On the second floor, the MenschenWelten (Human Worlds) bring together archaeology and ethnology, from the Stone Age in Lower Saxony to objects from the Americas, Oceania, and Asia. At the top, the KunstWelten (Art Worlds) show European painting and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.
According to the museum, the collections include more than 2.6 million objects and several thousand live animals. The program is complemented by annual special exhibitions and smaller interventions in the WechselWelten format.
