Regional museum in Husum's Nissenhaus covering Rungholt, storm floods, dike building, life on the Halligen islands and Frisian domestic culture, plus art from the west coast.
Marking the 30th anniversary of the musician's death, the exhibition shows documents, photos, song lyrics and sound installations and asks how relevant his political concerns remain today.
Works by Ukrainian artists and by children and young people from places near the front line, in the lower level with free admission.
Om museet
The foundation was laid by Husum native Ludwig Nissen (1855–1924), who had made his fortune as a diamond dealer in New York. In his will he left his hometown money and his art collection for a "people's house" on the American model, which was to combine a museum, library and gallery under one roof.
The three-story building was constructed from 1934 to 1937 based on a revised competition design by the Eiderstedt architect Georg Rieve; the Nissenhaus opened in May 1937. It quickly became the most important museum on Schleswig-Holstein's west coast and received, among other things, the estates of regional painters. The originally planned east wing was not added until 1986.
After a fundamental remodeling, the museum reopened in 2007 as the NordseeMuseum with a new, accessible exhibition; since then the municipal library has also been housed in the building. Since 2016 it has been called Nordfriesland Museum. Nissenhaus Husum and belongs to the Museumsverbund Nordfriesland, a museum network supported by the Nissen Foundation, the town of Husum and the district of Nordfriesland.
The permanent exhibition spans the story from the lost settlement of Rungholt through storm floods and coastal protection to everyday life on the Halligen islands and the nature of the Wadden Sea. The network also includes the Ostenfelder Bauernhaus, which opened in 1899 as Germany's first open-air museum.
