Om museet

The Oberpfälzer Volkskundemuseum has been housed in the Große Kanzlei at the foot of Burglengenfeld Castle since 1987. The 16th-century building served administration for centuries: first it housed the Landrichteramt (regional judicial office), later the Bezirksamt (district office), and from 1939 to 1972 the Landratsamt (district administration) of Burglengenfeld was based here.

The museum sees itself as a supra-regional focus museum for the Upper Palatinate in folklore, history and everyday culture. Numerous sections present work in crafts, agriculture and industry, housing, customs tied to the year and to life cycles, popular piety, costume and music, from the 18th to the early 20th century. Collections also cover popular wall decoration, furniture, silvered glass, enamelware, cottage industry and associations.

Since February 2017 the ground floor has been redesigned in seven rooms with multimedia displays. The opening section gives an overview of town and regional history. Three further rooms are devoted to Johann Michael Fischer (1692–1766), the town's most famous son and a master builder of the Baroque and Rococo. The museum's work is also supported by its Freundeskreis (friends' circle).
