Om museet

The Mattheiser Hof in Graach an der Mosel is, alongside the Josephshof, the second well-preserved Trier monastery wine estate in the village. It came to St. Matthias Abbey only at the beginning of the 18th century, together with vineyards and several houses. During the secularization around 1800, the monastic property was dissolved and auctioned.

In 1863 the municipality acquired the entire complex. After partially adding a story to the east wing, it used the building as a school with a teacher's residence, while the south wing served as the parsonage. The estate remained in use as a village elementary school until 1973, when the Graach school was officially dissolved.

From 1983 to 1986 the complex was rebuilt: a larger extension was added, along with the Mattheiser Halle for club and family celebrations, rooms for the music club and a youth room. In the former classrooms and the old teacher's apartment, the local history museum now presents Graach's history in six themed rooms: its historical development, viticulture and agriculture, church, school, clubs and artists.
