Om museet

The Ozeaneum is the newest site of the Stiftung Deutsches Meeresmuseum (German Oceanographic Museum Foundation), which originated in a natural history museum founded in Stralsund's old town in 1951. Because the original building in the Katharinenkloster (St. Catherine's Monastery) had become too small for large aquariums, a new building of its own was constructed on the harbor island and opened in July 2008.

The design came from the firm Behnisch Architekten: white, curved volumes made of bent steel bands evoke sails billowing in the wind or stones worn smooth by water, setting a deliberately modern accent next to the historic warehouses at the harbor. The museum received several awards for its architecture and concept, as well as the title of European Museum of the Year in 2010.

The Ozeaneum is devoted to the northern seas. A tour through numerous aquariums leads from the Baltic coast through the North Sea and Baltic Sea into the open Atlantic, whose largest tank holds around 2.6 million liters. It is complemented by exhibitions on the world ocean, the Baltic Sea and marine research, as well as the hall “1:1 Riesen der Meere” (1:1 Giants of the Sea) with life-size whale models. Humboldt penguins have lived on the roof terrace since 2010.

The museum is one of the most visited in northern Germany; in August 2026 it welcomed its ten millionth visitor since opening.
