Pfälzisches Steinhauermuseum
Half-timbered house on Alsenz's market square with a workshop, tools, and sandstones on the history of stonecutting in the Alsenz Valley.
Om museet
Master stonecutters are documented in Alsenz as early as the middle of the 18th century. With the Alsenz Valley Railway of 1870/71, the sandstone industry experienced a strong upswing: around 1900 there were about ten stonecutting businesses and several quarries in the village, and a total of about 1,500 people made their living from working stone. Alsenz sandstone was used for villas and public buildings far beyond the region. A long strike in 1906, new building materials such as cement and concrete, and the First World War ended this heyday.
Since 1995 the Pfälzisches Steinhauermuseum (Palatinate Stonecutters Museum) has commemorated the craft. It is run by the Historischer Verein der Nordpfalz Alsenz (Historical Society of the Northern Palatinate, Alsenz) and is housed in a listed half-timbered house on the market square that dates from the 16th/17th century; the open roof truss shows the carpentry of that era.
On the first floor are a furnished stonecutter's workshop with tools, lifting equipment, a grindstone, and a small forge, as well as a lapidarium with worked sandstones from Roman times to the present. These include Christmas tree stands that stonecutters made during the winter months when they had no work. The second floor tells of the hard living conditions of the workers and their families and of the quarries in the surrounding area, and shows a reconstructed drafting office from around 1900. A circular trail to buildings from the era of Alsenz stonecutting begins at the museum.
