Om museet
The roots of the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen go back to the time of the Electors Carl Philipp and Carl Theodor, who from the 1730s built up a painting gallery, a natural history cabinet, and collections of antiquities and coins in Mannheim. In the 19th century these were joined by the holdings of the Mannheimer Altertumsverein (antiquities society), founded in 1859, and by the travel photographs and collections of the Reiß siblings, whose name the institution bears today.
The Zeughaus, built in 1777/78 as an arsenal, has been used as a museum since 1908. After severe war damage, the Reiss-Museum reopened there in 1957. In 1988 a modern extension by Carlfried Mutschler and Erwin Bechtold followed across the street in D5 – today's Museum Weltkulturen. In 2001 the complex received its current name in recognition of the Engelhorn family of benefactors; the Zeughaus was completely renovated by 2007.
Since 2010 the municipally run museums have held the status of a Landesmuseum (state museum). That same year the Museum Bassermannhaus for music and art opened with the ZEPHYR photography space, followed in 2014 by the permanent exhibition on ancient Egypt and in 2023 by the Museum Peter & Traudl Engelhornhaus with photography and glass art. The group also includes research facilities such as the Curt-Engelhorn-Zentrum Archäometrie.
The collections comprise more than 1.2 million objects from archaeology, world cultures, art and cultural history, natural history, music and photography. The museums are best known beyond the region for their large cultural history special exhibitions.
