150 Jahre Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier

Anniversary exhibition on the history of the museum, with treasures from storage, major discoveries, historical photos and memories of people from the region.

Om museet

The museum was founded in 1877 as the Provinzialmuseum (provincial museum) of the Prussian Rhine Province, alongside its sister institution in Bonn. From the start, it was also responsible for archaeological heritage management in the Trier area, which is why much of the collection comes from its own excavations. The museum building on the edge of the Palastgarten was built from 1885 to 1889, damaged in World War II and rebuilt in altered form in the 1950s.

After 1945, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate took over responsibility for the museum; since 2008 it has been part of the Generaldirektion Kulturelles Erbe (General Directorate for Cultural Heritage), and together with the city’s Roman monuments it now forms the “Zentrum der Antike” (Center of Antiquity). In 2009 and 2011, the permanent exhibition was completely redesigned: a tour leads from the first humans some 200,000 years ago through the Celts and Romans to the court of the last Elector of Trier.

The focus is on Roman Trier, which was an imperial residence in late antiquity. Exhibits include mosaics, monumental funerary monuments from Neumagen and a model of the ancient city. The Trier Gold Hoard, discovered in 1993 and comprising more than 2,500 Roman gold coins, was temporarily off display after an attempted break-in in 2019 and has been shown in a newly furnished coin cabinet since 2022. In 2027, the museum will celebrate its 150th anniversary with a special anniversary exhibition.
