Wagner museum in Pirna-Graupa: a multimedia exhibition in the hunting lodge plus the Lohengrinhaus, where Wagner worked on his opera "Lohengrin" in 1846.
Exhibition developed together with the Richard Wagner Museum Lucerne, showing almost 200 years of Jewish responses to Wagner and his antisemitism – from rejection to admiration; texts in German and English.
Om museet
In the summer of 1846, Richard Wagner, then court conductor (Hofkapellmeister) in Dresden, treated himself to a country stay of several weeks in the village of Graupa near the Pillnitz summer palace. He and his wife Minna rented rooms at the Schäfer family farmstead, hiked as far as Saxon Switzerland, and sketched out major parts of his opera "Lohengrin" here.
At the suggestion of Max Gaßmeyer, a Leipzig high school teacher and Wagner admirer, two memorial rooms were set up in the farmhouse in 1907, furnished with mementos from Wagner's own possessions, from the Wagner family, and from his companions. This makes the Lohengrinhaus the oldest authentic Wagner residence still in use as a museum today. After various uses and several renovations – most recently for its 100th anniversary in 2007 – it presents the reconstructed living quarters along with the story of how "Lohengrin" came about and the impact it had.
In 2006 the town of Pirna, which Graupa has been part of since 1998, decided to include the neighboring Baroque hunting lodge as well. The lodge had developed out of an older manor estate in the 18th century and later served as a forestry office and municipal office. After its restoration, an exhibition on Wagner's years in Saxony opened there in January 2013, the year of Wagner's 200th birthday – covering his childhood and education in Leipzig and Dresden up to his flight after the 1849 revolution. A hologram theater, a virtual orchestra pit, and listening stations bring his music to life; a banquet hall hosts concerts, readings, and weddings. In the palace park, a cultural trail links the stations of his life.
