Om museet
The Rundfunkmuseum in Cham shows the development of broadcasting, television, sound and image recording, and telecommunications. It is run by the nonprofit association "Das Rundfunkmuseum e. V.", founded on April 1, 2015; its first chairman is Michael Heller. The museum opened in 2017 in a former telecommunications office in Cham.
Across about 1,800 square meters, rooms arranged by period display more than 3,000 mostly working devices from over 120 years. The display ranges from mechanical sound recordings before 1900 through the beginnings of radio in the 1920s, broadcasting in the Nazi era (partly in former air-raid shelters) and the postwar years, to the radios of the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle) era, recording studios, Hi-Fi and television technology. Separate sections are devoted to amateur radio and a tube room; in the entrance area stand an old television and radio studio and a medium-wave transmitter from Ismaning, which broadcasts on 801 kHz.
With an extension building added in 2023, the "Erlebniswelt Physik" (Physics Experience World) and "Erlebniswelt Technik" (Technology Experience World) opened, where visitors can try out basic electrophysical principles themselves at more than 100 stations. High-voltage and high-current demonstrations are also held. After the exhibition was remodeled, the museum reopened in October 2023.
