Om museet

The Sauerland Heimatbund (regional heritage association) founded the museum in 1925 as the "Sauerländer Heimatmuseum" for the Sauerland region of the Electorate of Cologne. The collection was first housed in two rooms of the Old Town Hall in Arnsberg Platz before moving in 1937 to the Landsberger Hof, where the museum is still based today.

The Landsberger Hof was built in 1605 as a small palace on the city wall, which Elector Ernest of Bavaria had constructed for Gertrud von Plettenberg. The building later passed to the district governor Dietrich von Landsberg, after whom it is named. After the destruction of Arnsberg Castle in 1762, it served the elector as a residence, and from 1803 under Hessian rule as a government building.

As part of Regionale 2013, the building of the Hochsauerlandkreis was expanded into the "Museums- und Kulturforum Südwestfalen." The Stuttgart firm Bez + Kock designed a new building clad in travertine, connected to the old building by a bridge with a panoramic window, providing space for special exhibitions and events. The ensemble also includes the "Blaues Haus" (Blue House), a half-timbered house built after the town fire of 1709, housing administration and an event hall.

Since the reopening of the renovated Landsberger Hof in autumn 2018, the permanent exhibition "Glaube. Macht. Geschichte." (Faith. Power. History.) tells the history of the Duchy of Westphalia from the Paleolithic to the present, with a focus on, among other things, the Nazi era in the Sauerland.
