Schiller-Museum Bauerbach
Manor house in Bauerbach where Friedrich Schiller lived as a fugitive in 1782/83 and worked on “Kabale und Liebe” – now a memorial site.
Om museet
After fleeing Stuttgart, Friedrich Schiller found refuge in December 1782 on the manor estate of the von Wolzogen family in the small village of Bauerbach near Meiningen. Henriette von Wolzogen provided him with rooms on the upper floor of her house, where the young poet stayed until July 1783 and worked on the bourgeois tragedy “Louise Millerin,” which later became famous under the title “Kabale und Liebe” (Intrigue and Love).
The memory of his stay was cherished early on: as early as 1847, Schiller’s study and bedroom were set up as a private memorial, and on the 100th anniversary of the poet’s death in 1905 the rooms were permanently opened to visitors. In 1934 a national foundation established for the purpose took over the property and also furnished the Wolzogen family’s living quarters as museum rooms. Since 1941 the house has belonged to a predecessor institution of today’s Klassik Stiftung Weimar.
After an initial renovation in 1995, the building underwent a thorough restoration that was completed in June 2020: the half-timbering was secured, the plaster facade was restored according to historical findings, and access for people with walking impairments and families with strollers was improved. Since then, an illustrated audio drama has introduced visitors to the house.
In addition to the historic rooms, an exhibition on the second floor shows how Bauerbach became a place of remembrance over more than 150 years and how Schiller rose to become a national icon. One of the treasures is the only surviving manuscript of “Louise Millerin.” The local Schiller association runs the museum on behalf of the Klassik Stiftung.
