Baroque summer palace of the prince-abbots of Fulda, near Fulda, with princely living quarters, important porcelain and antiquities collections and a palace park.
Paintings in which Jens Rausch uses ash, soot and bitumen to explore forest, water and the vulnerability of nature; on view in the Baroque bathhouse (Fri–Sun and public holidays 11:00–17:00).
Om museet
It all began with a smaller country house that Prince-Abbot Adolph von Dalberg had built just outside Fulda. From around 1739, his successor Amand von Buseck commissioned the architect Andrea Gallasini to expand it into a spacious Baroque summer palace with long side wings and a cour d'honneur.
After secularization in 1803, the palace went through turbulent decades: in 1813 it served as a military hospital and was looted. In 1816 it passed to Electoral Hesse; Elector Wilhelm II had it repaired and furnished in the Neoclassical style in the 1820s. Following the Prussian annexation, it came into the private ownership of Landgrave Friedrich Wilhelm of Hesse in 1878 and remained the summer residence of the landgrave's family.
After World War II, Landgrave Philipp of Hesse had the palace restored and set up as a museum; the first show rooms opened in 1951, and the museum was completed by 1972. Around 60 rooms display furniture, paintings and decorative arts of the 18th and 19th centuries, some from Schloss Wilhelmshöhe and Schloss Bellevue in Kassel.
Particularly well known are the porcelain collection, with table services from early European manufactories, and one of the most important private collections of antiquities in Germany. The palace is run by the Kulturstiftung des Hauses Hessen, which also maintains the archive of the House of Hesse here.
