Om museet
Schloss Neunhof, in the Nuremberg district of the same name, is the last surviving of more than a hundred manor houses that once protected Nuremberg's surroundings. Its origins are obscure; after its destruction in the First Margrave War of 1449/50, Hans Kress oversaw the reconstruction, and the half-timbering is dated to 1479. The palace belongs to the Nuremberg "Weiherhaus" type, a tower-like building on an almost square floor plan, with a sandstone base, a projecting half-timbered upper floor and a saddle roof.
For centuries it served as the seat of the local lord, as a fortification and as a summer residence for Nuremberg patrician families; the Kress family had the longest association with it. Because no major alterations were made, the furnishings of a patrician residence from the 16th to 18th centuries have largely survived. After the male line of the Kress family died out, the property passed to a community of heirs in the 19th century.
In 1960 the community of heirs made the palace available to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, which opened it as a palace and hunting museum and a visitor branch. The baroque garden was laid out in 1962, and the large palace garden followed in 1978/79. Because of serious structural damage, the palace has been closed to visitors for years and is being renovated; since 2021 the Stiftung Schloss Neunhof has been responsible for its preservation. The palace garden is open from April to October.
