Om museet

Schloss Egg stands in the valley of the Mettenbach in the district of Deggendorf and was originally a water castle. Wood samples from the keep suggest an age of around 850 to 900 years; in 1103, a Thiemo de Ekke is first mentioned as lord of Egg.

In 1403 the estate passed to the Fraunberg family, who sold it in 1427 for 8,000 Hungarian gold ducats to Duke Heinrich the Rich. Around 1840, Count Joseph Ludwig von Armansperg had the medieval castle remodeled in the Romantic style.

Today the listed complex is run by a palace administration. The palace museum traces the history from the knights' castle to the present: through the castle forecourt with the Marienbrunnen, the festive halls, the Gothic palace chapel from the 14th century, up the 45-meter keep, and down into the dungeon and torture chamber. Since early 2024, an archive with historical relics is also open, where a video wall shows a tour of the earth cave (Erdstall) “Schrazlgang”. The castle also serves as a hotel, wedding venue and film set.
