Schumann-Haus Leipzig
Clara and Robert Schumann's first shared home in Leipzig – a museum about the artist couple with the Schumann Hall and an interactive sound room.
Om museet
Friedrich August Scheidel had the Neoclassical residential building on Inselstraße built in 1838, in what was then a new neighborhood where publishers and printers such as Breitkopf & Härtel, C. F. Peters, and Reclam soon settled. Clara and Robert Schumann moved into their first shared home here in September 1840, shortly after their wedding, and lived in the house until 1844.
Works written during these years include the “Spring” Symphony, the Piano Quintet op. 44, and the jointly composed song cycle “Liebesfrühling.” In the salon the couple received guests such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Franz Liszt, and Hector Berlioz; together they kept a marriage diary.
During the GDR era, the listed building fell into disrepair. In 1999 a Leipzig company acquired it and had it restored. Since then, the house has been shared by the museum, run by the Schumann-Verein Leipzig (founded in 1995), an event hall, and the arts-oriented Freie Grundschule “Clara Schumann” (an independent elementary school).
For Clara Schumann's 200th birthday in 2019, the redesigned permanent exhibition “Experiment Künstlerehe” (Experiment: Artist Marriage) opened, presenting the house as the first museum dedicated to a musical couple. Since 2015, a sound room with an installation by Erwin Stache has complemented the offerings. The house is one of Leipzig's Music Heritage Sites and a venue of the CON SPIRITO chamber music festival.
