Om museet

The museum is housed in the former Royal Saxon Forestry Office on Karlsbader Straße, slightly above the market square. The building was renovated and extended from 2010 to 2014 at a cost of about €2.5 million, with European funding. The new building opened on September 13, 2014.

The permanent exhibition "Gipfelstürmer – Ein Thal erobert die Welt" tells how the snow that for a long time made life hard for the residents of the Ore Mountains ridge became an economic factor. It shows the development from early snow travel to competitive sport, with historic skis and sledges as well as memorabilia of Olympic and world champions, including ski jumper Jens Weißflog and Nordic combined athlete Eric Frenzel.

Separate areas are dedicated to the painter William Wauer and to the local poet and songwriter Anton Günther. The building also houses a library in an Art Nouveau setting and a children's floor.
