Om museet

The foundation of the collection was laid by Duke Christian Ludwig II of Mecklenburg in the 18th century: he acquired paintings and prints by 17th-century Dutch masters on a large scale and even had his own gallery set up in Schwerin. Added to these were animal paintings by the French court painter Jean-Baptiste Oudry, which today are considered the world's largest holding of his works.

For the grand-ducal art collections, a dedicated museum building in the Neo-Renaissance style with an Ionic portico was built from 1877 to 1882 to plans by Hermann Willebrand on the Alter Garten square opposite the palace. It opened on October 22, 1882. Since 2016 an extension has complemented the historic building.

Today the collection comprises well over 100,000 objects – from Flemish and Dutch painting through decorative arts, coins and an extensive print room to modern and contemporary art, including one of the most important Marcel Duchamp collections in Europe. Since 2018 the museum has been part of the Staatliche Schlösser, Gärten und Kunstsammlungen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

From October 2021 the museum was closed for about four years for a modernization funded largely by the Dorit & Alexander Otto Stiftung and the state. Since reopening on October 30, 2025, the collection has been completely re-presented on two floors, with additional exhibition space, restored historic room decorations, digital features and free admission.
