Om museet
The Hohes Schloss above Füssen's old town was the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg. Construction began at the end of the 13th century; the bishops acquired the castle hill in 1322 and between 1489 and 1504, under Bishop Friedrich von Zollern, expanded the fortress into a splendid castle. After secularization it passed to Bavaria and from 1862/63 served as a district court; today it houses a tax office and the galleries.
In the north wing, the former residential rooms of the bishops, a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections has shown panel paintings, sculptures and stained glass from around 1500 from the Allgäu and Swabia since 1931. A large part of the holdings comes from the collection of the Princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein, which King Ludwig I acquired in 1828. In the magnificent Festsaal with its carved coffered ceiling, stained glass by Hans Holbein the Elder and Hans Burgkmair can be seen, among other works.
Since 1982 the Städtische Gemäldegalerie has also been part of the house. It shows paintings of the 19th-century Munich school, including works by Carl Spitzweg, and the monumental painting "Prozession in Leukerbad" by Oskar Freiwirth-Lützow. Both galleries share one admission; the tour also includes the parapet walk (Wehrgang), gate tower and St. Vitus Chapel (Veitskapelle).
