Om museet
The museum's origins go back to the physician and local researcher Heinrich Eidam, who founded the Verein von Altertumsfreunden (association of antiquity friends) in 1879 and from 1906 housed its growing collection. On September 4, 1921, the city opened the "Städtisches Museum Gunzenhausen" in converted attic rooms of the former Realschule (secondary school).
In 1938 it moved into a Baroque mansion on the Marktplatz; in 1984 it moved to the building at Rathausstraße 12. There it showed the history of the city, first mentioned in a document in 823, across four floors, in about 20 rooms and roughly 790 square meters.
The collection includes applied arts from the 17th to the 20th century, furniture, clocks, traditional costumes, guild objects, Jewish ritual objects and an alchemist's kitchen. A special feature is 115 faience tiles with falconry motifs from the former margrave's hunting lodge. Since 2017 the museum has been closed indefinitely for fire-safety reasons.
