Om museet

The roots of the Lindau city museum go back to the late 19th century: a museum society founded in 1889 set up a municipal museum on the upper floor of the Old Town Hall in 1890. In 1929 the industrialist Ludwig Kick acquired the Haus zum Cavazzen, had it repaired, and donated it to the city on the condition that a museum be established there; it opened in July 1930.

The building itself is one of the most important Baroque townhouses on Lake Constance. After the city fire of 1728, the Appenzell master builder Jakob Grubenmann built it in 1729/30 for the merchant family Seutter von Loetzen, who lived here and stored goods such as salt and wine. Its painted facade and the mighty, curved hip roof are striking.

For a long time the museum mainly showed art, domestic culture, and decorative arts from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century; from 2010, internationally noted art exhibitions were added. From 2018 the building was fundamentally renovated and redesigned with federal funds. On May 17 and 18, 2025, it reopened as the Cavazzen Museum: accessible, with an interactive permanent exhibition on Lindau's history from the imperial and trading city through the 19th century to the present, a panoramic time machine, a freely accessible "Stadtplatz" (town square) on the first floor, and the roof truss, open to the public for the first time, with a view over the island. The museum belongs to the cultural office of the city of Lindau.
