The origins of the Neustadt museum go back to 1871, when the publisher Julius Mißbach urged the trade association to set up a collection of antiquities. In 1874 a local history museum opened in a classroom of the elementary school. Some two decades later, the collection passed into municipal ownership and moved into the attic of the town hall. In 1972 the museum was finally closed.

From 1991 on, the town collected objects deliberately on crafts, industry and everyday history, on the surrounding manorial estates, on artificial flower production and on agricultural machine building. In 1994 a full-time director was appointed for the first time. In 1997 the museum opened in the listed malt house, which the brewing commune had built in 1768 and which was extensively renovated in 1995/96.

On about 300 square meters, the museum showed the manorial estates of the church parish, the artificial flower industry, shooting clubs and themes from town history. It also included a middle-class living room from the Gründerzeit, a rope maker's workshop with a shop, and a file-cutting workshop. Personalities such as Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger, who opened up the Saxon Switzerland region, and Friedrich Adolph August Struve were also featured.

Since October 1, 2023, the museum has been closed. The collection is being scientifically surveyed and stored. A new building with a new thematic focus is to open in 2033, for the town's 700th anniversary.
