Om museet
The gatekeeper's house at the Wehrheim town gate dates from 1778 and was built on the old town wall. In 1892 the railway worker Wilhelm Velte bought the house from the municipality; around 1900 eight to ten people at times lived there in two rooms and a kitchen. Most recently the family of a master tailor lived there.
After the house had stood empty for a long time, the Geschichts- und Heimatverein Wehrheim (history and local heritage association) applied in December 1978 to acquire it. In 1980 the municipality bought it, and association members gutted the building and converted it into a museum on a large scale, largely through volunteer work. The Stadttormuseum opened on May 28, 1983, as part of the 3rd Wehrheim Week.
The museum has two exhibition rooms on two floors. There is no permanent exhibition throughout; instead the association shows exhibitions on individual themes from time to time, for example on cameras, clocks or woodworking. The permanent exhibits include a copy of the 1046 charter in which Wehrheim is first mentioned. The gatekeeper's house is regarded as the town's landmark.
