Om museet

The collegiate church of St. Servatii goes back to a palace chapel that King Heinrich I (Henry the Fowler) founded on Quedlinburg's castle hill in the early 10th century; he was buried here in 936. His widow, St. Mathilde, then established a foundation for noblewomen that was closely tied to the Ottonian and Salian dynasties and kept alive the memory of the royal tombs. The present High Romanesque building was consecrated in 1129; since 1994 the church has been part of the Quedlinburg UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The foundation became Protestant in 1539 and was dissolved in 1803. The church is still the parish church of the Protestant congregation of Quedlinburg today. In the 19th century, conservation work uncovered its Romanesque character again, and a Neo-Romanesque apse was added in the 1940s.

The cathedral treasury grew from Ottonian times onward through imperial gifts and endowments and from the 12th century was kept in the so-called Zitter. In 1945 a US officer stole twelve pieces and took them to Texas; ten of them returned in the early 1990s, and two are still considered missing. Since 1993 the treasure has once again been on view in the historic treasure chambers. On March 28, 2026, after some 30 years, a newly designed permanent exhibition opened that links the church, crypt, high choir and treasure chambers into a tour on memoria and Ottonian patronage.
