Om museet

The museum goes back to a group of collectors and restorers around entrepreneur Eberhard Layher, who founded a museum association at the end of 1980 to show their vehicles to a wide audience. On May 6, 1981, the Auto & Technik Museum Sinsheim opened, initially on 5,000 square meters right next to the A6 autobahn. It is still run today by a non-profit association funded by admission fees, donations and membership dues.

The collection grew rapidly over the following decades: in 1982 came the Blue Flame rocket car, in the late 1980s the first large aircraft such as a Douglas DC-3, and in 1990 one of the largest Formula 1 exhibitions in Europe. In 1995 the museum got its own railway stop, and in 1996 the IMAX cinema opened. The two supersonic passenger aircraft on the hall roof became the museum's landmarks: the Soviet Tupolev Tu-144 (since 2001) and the Concorde handed over by Air France (since 2004). Nowhere else do the two stand side by side.

Today the museum, which is closely linked to the Technik Museum Speyer, displays more than 3,000 exhibits on over 50,000 square meters: vintage cars, sports cars, locomotives, motorcycles, agricultural machinery, military vehicles and more than 60 aircraft, some of which you can walk through. The most recent major acquisition is the U17 submarine, which was brought to Sinsheim in 2024 in an elaborate transport by water and road and has been open to visitors inside since 2025.

• U-Boot U17 – Decommissioned in 2010, the submarine stands on the outdoor grounds and can be explored from the inside through its narrow passageways.

Combination ticket museum + IMAX cinema €30 (children €25), IMAX only €11 (children €7); feature films in the IMAX excluded. Free admission on your birthday, including an IMAX documentary (ID required). Tickets are not tied to a date or time slot. Paid parking (first 60 minutes and 17:00–3:00 free, except on TSG Hoffenheim match days).

The museum grounds, including parking, restaurants and ticket desks, are accessible, and there are accessible restrooms. Most of the exhibition areas can be reached via ramps or elevators; individual galleries and some walk-through large exhibits such as aircraft are not accessible. Dogs only on the freely accessible outdoor grounds; assistance and guide dogs with proof are exempt.

Children's birthday package for ages 6 to 13 with admission, an IMAX visit, a decorated birthday table and food (no supervision by the museum; a 1-hr child-friendly museum tour can be added). Free admission on your birthday. Baby changing rooms in the restrooms of the museum restaurants. The museum recommends the IMAX 3D cinema only for children aged 4 and up.

Rentals through the event museum team (event@technik-museum.de) for conferences, corporate events, trade fairs and private celebrations, including weddings (non-religious or Protestant ceremonies). In Sinsheim, venues include the “Terminal” event hall (30–450 people), museum halls (e.g. Sports Cars & Formula 1, up to 300), the IMAX cinema (up to 325), the locomotive hall, the restaurants “Concorde & Tupolev Salon” and “Flight Deck”, the courtyard and the hotel.
