Besucherbergwerk Tiefer Stollen
Show mine and healing gallery in Aalen-Wasseralfingen: ride the mine train into the former iron ore mine in the Braunenberg, guided tours only.
Om museet
Iron ore was mined from the seams of the Middle Jurassic (Brauner Jura) at the Braunenberg near Wasseralfingen, with interruptions, from the early 17th century until 1939. The Tiefer Stollen (deep adit) was dug around 1840 to reach the lower seam; most of the ore was hauled out through it until mining here ended in 1924 because of the low iron content. Over time the mine grew to around six kilometers (3.7 miles) of tunnels.
After the Wasseralfingen mining trail was laid out in 1979, interest in the old mine grew. From 1986 it was made accessible again with the support of the newly founded mining association, and regular tours began in September 1987. Since 1989, part of the mine has also been licensed as a healing gallery for respiratory diseases; the consistently cool, humid and almost dust-free air is used there for therapy.
Visitors ride the mine train about 400 meters (1,300 ft) into the mountain, watch a multimedia show on the region's mining history and, on the tour, see mining techniques, shafts and a simulated blast. Since 2015/16 there has been an accessible tour route with a specially built car for wheelchair users. The mine is operated by the City of Aalen, is an information point of the UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb and the starting point of the mining trail; during Advent, a Christmas market is held underground.
