Om museet
The museum in Sasbach-Obersasbach is dedicated to the painter Toni Merz (1895–1966), who after studying at the Karlsruhe Academy taught art for many years at the Heimschule Lender in Sasbach. After his death, his widow, Thilde Merz, gave his entire artistic estate to the municipality of Obersasbach, with the wish that a foundation be set up in his memory.
As early as 1972, the Toni-Merz-Stiftung presented his work in its own rooms in the old school and town hall of the village; initially two rooms were available, which also served as storage. Between 1990 and 1992, the municipality of Sasbach converted the entire first floor of the building into a bright painting gallery. Since 1992, part of Toni Merz's work has been on view all year round.
Alongside the permanent display, the house shows changing exhibitions by contemporary artists. The Toni-Merz-Preis, awarded to graduates of the Karlsruhe Art Academy, commemorates the painter.
