Om museet
The Tüöttenmuseum keeps alive the memory of the Mettingen linen merchants, whose traveling trade goes back more than 400 years. From Mettingen they first brought high-quality linen to the Netherlands and later also to northern and eastern Germany, the Baltic states and Scandinavia. The first to go were peat cutters and grass mowers, who worked as Hollandgänger (seasonal workers) for their western neighbors; the Dutch soon showed interest in the good linen from the Tecklenburg region.
The history of the fashion company C&A also goes back to Mettingen merchants: in 1841, the brothers Clemens and August Brenninkmeyer opened a textile shop in Sneek in the Netherlands.
Committed members of the local heritage society set up the museum, which has been open to the public since 1962. It consists of three half-timbered houses placed side by side: a house from the Bauerschaft Wiehe, rebuilt true to the original, a replica of the Hemmelgarnsches Haus, and a reconstruction of a gable of the Heuerhaus from the Brenninckhof.
The furnished rooms show the daily life and work of the Tüötten and their families, including a hearth with a smoke hood, a loom, a spinning wheel, a clog maker's workshop, a bedroom, black bridal costumes and the good parlor. Wall paintings, drawings, photographs and reverse-glass paintings complement the furniture and equipment collection.
