Zeitreise Strom – Das Deutsche Elektrizitätsmuseum
Germany's largest electricity museum in a listed 1928 transformer substation – from the voltaic pile to electric mobility.
Om museet
The Recklinghausen-Süd transformer substation was built in 1927/28 by the Vereinigte Elektrizitätswerke Westfalen on the Rhine–Herne Canal and went into operation in February 1928. The brick halls fully enclosed the switchgear to protect it from the fog and coal dust of the Ruhr region. When the technology became outdated in the late 1980s, the operator decided against demolition: from 1991 to 1994, the buildings were restored and at the same time fitted with a modern gas-insulated system that still distributes electricity today.
In December 2000, the museum Strom und Leben (Electricity and Life) opened in the areas no longer needed. In 2009, a vehicle hall on the history of electric mobility was added, with historic vehicles from the holdings of the energy company RWE. Since 2016, the nonprofit Zeitschalter gGmbH has run the museum; in 2021, it was expanded with support from the E.ON Stiftung and the NRW-Stiftung and renamed "Zeitreise Strom – Das Deutsche Elektrizitätsmuseum" (Time Travel Electricity – The German Electricity Museum).
In four buildings, the exhibition shows how electricity has transformed work, home life, medicine, leisure and advertising over some 200 years – from the first experiments through generation and distribution to visions of the future. It is based on a collection of several tens of thousands of objects, from household appliances to a steam turbine. The museum is an anchor point of the Route der Industriekultur (Industrial Heritage Trail) and also serves as a conference venue and tourist information office.
