Around 200 exhibits, models and hands-on stations show the history and technology of railway tunnel construction; runs until mid-2028, with a children's rally.
It all began with a small collection of models that the Bavarian State Railways displayed in Munich from 1882. At the urging of the city of Nuremberg, the collection came here and opened on October 1, 1899, as the Royal Bavarian Railway Museum; with the addition of a new postal and telegraph department, it was called the Verkehrsmuseum (Transport Museum) from 1901. It is one of the oldest museums of the history of technology in the German-speaking world. In 1925 it moved into the imposing new building on Lessingstraße near the main station. This also became the new home of the lavish Neo-Gothic Königssalon (royal salon) from Nuremberg's old Centralbahnhof, which Friedrich Bürklein had designed around 1860 as a waiting room for crowned heads.
The postal department evolved into today's Museum für Kommunikation Nürnberg, which is in the same building and can be visited with the same ticket. The railway section is now the DB Museum, the corporate museum of Deutsche Bahn, and has been supported for around ten years by the Deutsche Bahn Stiftung. There are branches in Koblenz and Halle (Saale).
Since 2005 the permanent exhibition has presented the history of the railway in Germany from its beginnings to the present. Among the best-known vehicles are the replica of the 1835 "Adler", the saloon cars of King Ludwig II and Otto von Bismarck, the "Fliegender Hamburger" (Flying Hamburger) and the streamlined steam locomotive 05 001. The museum is complemented by an outdoor area with more vehicles, a large model railway layout, the Modellarium and the KIBALA children's railway land.
